Author, nurse and educator Daisy Magalit Rodriguez gives readers an innovative and novel view of The Balance Concept in Health and Nursing. Her work is a product of over six years of rumination on an idea that came to her while she was still teaching nursing. She discovered that the concept of balance is mentioned so often in many areas of endeavor. As she conceptualized the role of balance in human existence and survival, she realized that it had an application to her field of nursing and health in general.
Balance, the central concept in this book, is essential to survival through its five elements: adaptation, equilibrium, homeostasis, needs and health. Using existing related concepts and theories derived from the social, nursing, and physical sciences, Rodriguez conceptualized a novel view of the health-illness continuum. The Balance Health Nursing Model emerged from this theoretical background along with a Balance Health Assessment Tool, developed with a sample case study to demonstrate its use. This view of balance offers an alternative approach to health and illness and the role of nursing and other health care professionals in their practice settings.
